WASHINGTON, October 30, 2014 – The Wireless Foundation™ today announced STEM Mobile Labs, a mobile education campaign to engage students in grades 8-12 via wireless technology. Central to the campaign is the free STEM Mobile Labs app that features quality educational content for students to have a hands-on learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. Available in the Amazon, Apple and Google app stores, the app is optimized for smartphones and tablets.
Within the STEM Mobile Labs app, each category – science, technology, engineering and math – offer a variety of other apps to inspire students to conduct-real world and virtual experiments, gather data and think critically. The app, which features innovative ways for teens to use their mobile devices for class work, homework and test prep, also serves to encourage them to consider a career in one of these categories. In addition, educators may use the custom lesson plans and in-class activity sheets to help them integrate wireless learning tools into their curricula.
“Today’s kids are truly living the ‘connected life,’ so it should come as no surprise they expect and want to use their mobile devices for learning. By creating the STEM Mobile Labs app, we’re engaging with them on the platform they’re most comfortable with while providing them with the information necessary to considering a career in science, technology, engineering or math,” said Meredith Attwell Baker, President of The Wireless Foundation and President and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association. “We’re also pleased to provide educators with materials that will help teach their students about STEM. By working together, we’re confident America will continue to lead the world in mobile.”
Young Minds Inspired (YMI), together with hundreds of educators and administrators, developed the STEM Mobile Labs app and educational materials to inspire teens to study and consider a STEM career. For more information on the program, visit: http://www.wirelessfoundation.org/stem-app.aspx
